What should you do?

  • Contact a locksmith. A locksmith can replace your locks, program a new key, or reprogram a key you already have. They can also help if your key is stuck in your car. The cost depends on the model of your car, how far the locksmith has to travel, and the time of day.
  • Check your car insurance. Your insurance policy may cover replacing a lost key or getting you back into your car. However, some policies only cover stolen keys, and you may have to pay an excess. You can check your policy documents or contact your insurance provider.
  • Contact your breakdown service provider Some breakdown service providers offer car key replacement as a standard. However, you should check your policy to see if this is included.

Bring proof of identity and ownership

You’ll need to provide proof of identity, such as a driving license, and proof of ownership, such as a V5C form.

If you’ve lost your vehicle’s keys, you’re not alone!  According to an OSV survey, it’s extremely common for drivers to lose their keys: 47% of UK motorists regularly lose their keys, many spend over 24 hours per year looking for them, and a risk-taking 28% only have one set and no spare key. Another similar survey by the RAC found that British drivers have spent a whopping £180 million replacing lost car keys.
